{"id":3051,"date":"2021-03-27T23:24:19","date_gmt":"2021-03-27T15:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.magicandlove.com\/blog\/?p=3051"},"modified":"2021-04-01T17:38:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T09:38:30","slug":"movement-in-time-part-2-red-temple-version-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.magicandlove.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/27\/movement-in-time-part-2-red-temple-version-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Movement in Time, Part 2, Red Temple version (2019)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hong Kong in Poor Images<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a re-run of the original Movement in Time, Part 2 artwork with 2 new fighting scenes from the 2 martial art films with the same Chinese title \u706b\u71d2\u7d05\u84ee\u5bfa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple 1963<\/li><li>Burning Paradise 1994<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is created for an exhibition <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/elycenter.org\/hong-kong-in-poor-images\" target=\"_blank\">Hong Kong in Poor Images<\/a> (curated by Hong Zeng) shown in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elycenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ely Center of Contemporary Art<\/a>, New Haven, 12 Jan \u2013 16 Feb 2020 .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Movement in Time, Part 2 - Red Temple version\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CVj1GPr5r0Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Movement in Time series explore the creative use of movement\/motion data obtained from found footages of motion pictures. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.magicandlove.com\/blog\/artworks\/movement-in-time-part-2-chinese-martial-art-version\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Part 2 series<\/a> investigate the motion data from the fighting sequences of martial art films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Once the motion data is extracted from different scenes, it is matched against a database of cursive style Chinese calligraphic characters known as the One Thousand Characters Classics \u5343\u5b57\u6587. The actual matching is based on machine learning algorithms. The matched Chinese characters will be shown on the screen as animated writings. This version also gathers all the matched characters into poetic lines. These lines are, however, not sensible to read as real poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to obtain the movement\/motion data, the custom software that I developed makes use of the technique known as optical flow, in computer vision. It basically tracks the flow of pixels across consecutive picture frames in time. The visualisation of optical flow resembles a low resolution image digitised in poor quality. Here are some of the experiments.
